Below is a list of all the main trainings available to AYSO volunteers.

COACH training (in person)

  • to coach 6U: you’ll need the 6U Coaching Course
  • to coach 7U and 8U: you’ll need the 8U Coaching Course
  • to coach 10U: you’ll need the 10U Coaching Course
  • to coach 12U: you’ll need the 12U Coaching Course
  • to coach 14U: you’ll need the Intermediate Coaching Course (must have 12U course and a year coaching 12U)
  • to coach 16U or 19U: you’ll need the Advanced Coaching Course (must have Intermediate certification)

Register for all courses at AYSOU.org – you use the same login for AYSOU as you do for Sports Connect, so you must have your AYSO Volunteer Application submitted (Step 1, above) before creating your AYSOU.org account.

You can take these courses anywhere in the country — but we recommend Region 13 because our training encompasses our region’s unique culture. To find a course, click the Region 13 schedule (coming soon), or search AYSOU, as follows:

My Courses -> Instructor Led Courses -> Coach Instructor Led Courses > Sessions. Scroll until you find the course you want to attend. Many courses require on-line material to be completed BEFORE attending in person.

REFEREE training (in person)

  • to ref for 6U thru 8U:  you’ll need the “6U – 8U” Referee Course
  • to ref for 10U and Older (new to reffing):  you’ll need the “Regional” Referee Course
  • to ref for 10U and Older (reffed 6U – 8U prior): you’ll need the “8U to Regional Upgrade” Referee Course
  • to ref 12U and Older (reffed Regional prior): you’ll need the “Intermediate” Referee Course recommended

AYSO's SAFE HAVEN training (Coaches must take in person, Refs may take online)

Coaches must take Safe Haven in person. Refs may take it in person or online.

To find a course, click the Region 13 schedule (coming soon), or search AYSOU as follows:

  1. Be sure to have submitted the National Volunteer Application, or else you won’t be able to access AYSOU.
  2. Go to AYSO’s online training center (AYSO U) with this link:  http://www.aysou.org
  3. Enter your login information from Sports Connect (formerly Blue Sombrero).
  4. To take the course online, click on My Courses > Safe Haven Course.
  5. To register for the in-person course, click on My Courses > Instructor-Led Courses > Safe Haven.

Note to longtime volunteers:  You only have to take Safe Haven once, not annually. That said, if you took it before 2013, you will need to update your credentials by taking the new version of the class.  Looking at your course history (in AYSOU), you will satisfy this requirement if your transcript shows credit for the class entitled “AYSO’s Safe Haven” (or for Refs only, “zOnline AYSOs Safe Haven”).

AYSO’s CONCUSSION AWARENESS training (online)

  1. Be sure to have submitted the National Volunteer Application, or else you  won’t be able to access AYSOU.
  2. Go to AYSO’s online training center (AYSO U) with this link:  http://www.aysou.org
  3. Enter your login information from Sports Connect (formerly Blue Sombrero).
  4. In AYSOU, click on My Courses > CDC Concussion Course.

Note to longtime volunteers:  You only have to take Concussion Awareness once, not annually.

SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST training - NEW IN 2020 (online)

  1. Go to website: https://www.aysovolunteers.org/sudden-cardiac-arrest-sca-2/
  2. Click on the “One-time Training” link in the table row pertaining to “California”.
  3. Create NFHS account by clicking “Sign-In” icon at top right of webpage.
  4. Order” the Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) course…….it is free of charge!
  5. Course takes about 15 minutes to complete (simple six-question quiz at end of course).
  6. Save completion certificate as a PDF (keep for your records).
  7. Confirm you took the course by uploading your PDF here.

Note: You only have to take the Sudden Cardiac Arrest training once, not annually.
