As you have probably seen, AYSO and other youth sports have been working to manage how our kids play in our current COVID environment. We also wanted to share a bit of information on decisions relating to training our volunteer refs, particularly our Regional Referees who referee 10U and 12U games.
We are working to limit the in-person time that our volunteers have to spend this year, while at the same time making sure we adequately prepare our referees to be out there for the kids. We hope we have the balance right.
Instead of the full day Regional Referee Course, we are using the hybrid course model. Referee volunteers will first take the online “Regional Referee Training” course through AYSOU.org, and then attend an in-person “Regional Referee Online Companion Course.” The online portion must be completed before coming to the in-person portion.
To take the online portion, go to AYSOU.org, login, click on “Online Courses” in the red band at the top; click “open” next to “Refereeing Courses” and then click the “Open” button for “Regional Referee Training.”
For the in-person course you must register in advance. Login to AYSOU.org, click on “In Person Courses” in the red band at the top; click “open” next to “Referee Instructor Led Courses,” and then click the “Open” button for “Regional Referee Online Companion Course.” Then click “sessions” to see all available courses. (You can use the find feature on your web browser, typically control-F, to search for “Altadena” to find the courses being taught by us at the Region 13 Clubhouse—you can also attend any other sessions taught in another Region if it is more convenient for you.)
For the classes we are teaching in Region 13, we are doing several things in how we manage the course in the current environment:
We are maintaining smaller classes and where appropriate splitting the class into two groups for better spacing
For our evening courses, we are trying to teach the class entirely outside
For our day-time courses we are trying to teach the class half inside and half outside (as we cannot use the projector outside in the bright light of day)
For inside portions, we will have doors open and have filter fans running inside
We mandating that masks be worn by all students at all times inside and outside regardless of vaccination status
All of our instructors have confirmed they are vaccinated and instructors will wear masks when not able to maintain distance from students
Region 13 classes are being offered at the clubhouse on
- Tuesday September 7
Saturday September 11
Thursday September 16
To be fully certified and receive a uniform, volunteers also need to complete the general AYSO Safe Haven trainings on AYSOU.org (Under Online Courses-Safe Haven Courses):
AYSO’s Safe Haven
CDC Heads Up Concussion Training
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Online Course
Note that PRO/youth Referees do not take the Safe Haven class, but they should take the Concussion Awareness and Sudden Cardiac Arrest modules.
Uniforms will be available at the end of the in-person sessions for those who have completed all requirements.
Thanks again for volunteering. It’s a challenging time for all of us, and we appreciate your dedication to the kids or our Region. If you have any questions at all about training, please contact one of your volunteer referee staff:
