Become a Referee – Youth

Thank you for volunteering as a YOUTH REFEREE for our kids in AYSO Region 13!

Normally, we would ask you to follow these FIVE STEPS to help you provide a world-class experience for our children. However, due to COVID-19 and the uncertain Fall schedule, please hold off on steps 1 thru 4 until further notice. Instead, click here to let us know you’re interested, and we’ll contact you with further instructions.

In the meantime, if you’d like to get a head start, please go ahead and complete step 5 at your convenience.

Click each step to expand and get further instructions (or click here for a PDF version of this page to download or print).

Step 1

Submit an AYSO VOLUNTEER APPLICATION
3

This is something every AYSO volunteer must do every year.

Start by checking out this page – “Apply to Volunteer – YOUTH” – and pay close attention to the instructions, because it’s not obvious. Then when you’re ready, click here to connect directly to the Sports Connect (formerly Blue Sombrero) registration system, where you can create or log into your account and submit an application.

Note that due to COVID-19, these applications are on hold, so we ask all volunteers to click here and simply enter their info. We will contact you when we know more about the status of Fall 2020.

Step 2

GET TRAINED to be a Youth Referee (in person / minimum age = 10)
3
  • to ref for 6U thru 8U:  you’ll need the “6U – 8U” Referee Course
  • to ref for 10U and Older (new to reffing):  you’ll need the “Regional” Referee Course
  • to ref for 10U and Older (reffed 6U – 8U prior): you’ll need the “8U to Regional Upgrade” Referee Course
  • to ref 12U and Older (reffed Regional prior): you’ll need the “Intermediate” Referee Course recommended

>> To see the ages of players in each division, refer to this Soccer Age Chart.

Register for all courses at AYSOU.org –  you use the same login for AYSOU as you do for Sports Connect, so you must have your AYSO Volunteer Application submitted before creating your AYSOU.org account.

You can take these courses anywhere in the country — but we recommend Region 13 because our training encompasses our region’s unique culture.  In 2020, Region 13 will hold 6U-8U, Regional, Upgrade, and Intermediate courses in July, August, and September. To find a course, click the Region 13 schedule (coming soon), or search AYSOUas follows:

My Courses -> Instructor Led Courses -> Referee Instructor Led Courses > “Sessions”.  Scroll until you find the course you want to attend. For Regional Referee there is also a “Regional Referee Companion Course,” which requires on-line material to be completed BEFORE attending in person.
