Become a Coach

Thank you for becoming a COACH for our kids in AYSO Region 13!

Please follow these FIVE STEPS to help you provide a world-class experience for our children.

Z

Step 1

Submit an AYSO VOLUNTEER APPLICATION
3
Start with the AYSO VOLUNTEER APPLICATION for MY2020 (opens April 2020)

This is something every AYSO volunteer must do every year. Click here to connect to the Sports Connect (formerly Blue Sombrero) registration system.

Z

Step 2

Get Trained to be a coach (in person)
3
  • to coach 6U: 6U Coaching Course
  • to coach 7U and 8U: 8U Coaching Course
  • to coach 10U: 10U Coaching Course
  • to coach 12U: 12U Coaching Course
  • to coach 14U: Intermediate Coaching Course (must have 12U course and a year coaching 12U)
  • to coach 16U or 19U: Advanced Coaching Course (must have Intermediate certification)

>> To see the ages in each division, refer to this Soccer Age Chart.

Register for all courses at AYSOU.org – you use the same login for AYSOU as you do for Sports Connect, so you must have your AYSO Volunteer Application submitted before creating your AYSOU.org account.

You can take these courses anywhere in the country — but we recommend Region 13 because our training encompasses our region’s unique culture. In 2020, Region 13 will hold 6U, 8U, 10U, and 12U courses in July and August, at least. To find a course, click the Region 13 schedule (coming soon), or search AYSOU, as follows:

My Courses -> Instructor Led Courses -> Coach Instructor Led Courses > Sessions. Scroll until you find the course you want to attend. Many courses require on-line material to be completed BEFORE attending in person.

Z

Step 3

Complete AYSO's SAFE HAVEN training (in person)
3

Coaches must take this in person – online is NOT sufficient. To find a course, click the Region 13 schedule (coming soon), or search AYSOU, as follows:

  1. Be sure to have submitted the National Volunteer Application, or else you won’t be able to access AYSOU.
  2. Go to AYSO’s online training center (AYSO U) with this link: http://www.aysou.org
  3. Enter your login information from Sports Connect (formerly Blue Sombrero).
  4. To take the course in person, click on My Courses > Instructor-Led Courses > Safe Haven.

Note to longtime coaches: You only have to take Safe Haven once, not annually. That said, if you took Safe Haven before 2013, you will need to update your credentials by taking the new version of the class. Looking at your course history (in eAYSO or AYSOU), you will satisfy this requirement if your transcript shows credit for the class entitled “AYSO’s Safe Haven,” not “Safe Haven – Coach.”

Z

Step 4

Complete AYSO's CONCUSSION AWARENESS course (online)
3
  4. In AYSOU, click on My Courses > CDC Concussion Course.

Note to longtime volunteers: You only have to take Concussion Awareness once, not annually.

Z

Step 5

Complete the SUDDEN CARDIAC ARRECT training (online - NEW IN 2020)
3
  1. Click here for instructions and to access the training: https://www.aysovolunteers.org/sudden-cardiac-arrest-sca-2/
  2. Click on the “One-time Training” link in the table row pertaining to “California”.
  3. Create NFHS account by clicking “Sign-In” icon at top right of webpage.
  4. “Order” Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) course…….it is free of charge!
  5. Course takes about 15 minutes to complete (simple 6 question quiz at end of course).
  6. Save completion certificate as a pdf (keep for your records).
  7. Confirm you took the course by uploading your PDF here.

Note to all volunteers: You only have to take the Sudden Cardiac Arrest training once, not annually.

Once you complete these five steps, register your player at Sports Connect (formerly Blue Sombrero) and check “Coach” when asked to volunteer. You should also email the Division Coach Administrator for your player’s division. If you’re not connected to a player, e-mail coach@ayso13.org to let us know you’re volunteering. Thanks!
