The AYSO Youth Development Program is an AYSO National program that has grown out of AYSO’s experience with the “AYSO Plus” and “Progressive Development Program (PDP)”. YDP has features that Region 13 believes overcome many of the perceived shortcomings of those previous programs. Region 13 participates in YDP in the U10, U12 and U14 divisions, as well as U16 and U19 if there is sufficient interest.
The YDP season runs from mid-March to mid-May. Registration is usually in January. The teams will travel to other Area 1C regions for their “away” games. Similarly, YDP teams from other participating regions will come to Region 13 to play some of their “away” games.
The program requires a commitment from the players and their families beyond that required for regular season teams. The “extra” commitment is required because YDP teams practice 2 times per week. In addition, teams will receive instruction from paid trainers on nearly a weekly basis and a certain amount of local travel will be required. Enrollment in YDP is open to any player who will make the extra commitment.
There are no skill tryouts required. Teams are formed by an independent committee of executive board members in each region with coaches’ input. The teams are formed from among those players who have applied by using all the evaluations available within the region for the players involved. These include ratings from the previous fall season, All-Stars/Regional Stars, and any tournament team the player may have participated in. It is possible that not all players who apply for YDP will be placed on a team. Players that choose to apply to the YDP program may not be placed on a team either because there are not enough players for a team in that age group or his/her evaluations are not high enough for the average level of play of the players as a group. Any player who is not placed on a team will receive a full refund of their registration fees.
All players who have parent/adult volunteers that ARE active, and will be participating in the YDP season will be given priority over players that have no parent/adult volunteers. As usual, we need refs, coaches to help run this program. Coaches are selected for both their coaching ability and their commitment to the AYSO philosophies.
While YDP offers advanced training and inter-regional play, all participants must uphold the AYSO National rules and philosophies, such as guaranteed 2 quarters of play in every game, good sportsmanship and positive coaching.
