What if the Weather is Bad?
Soccer is played in all types of weather conditions, including wind, rain and snow. In AYSO Region 13, the Commissioner, the Regional Referee Administrator, the Safety Director and the Assistant Commissioners have the authority to cancel or postpone games because of weather or unsafe playing conditions. However, unless previously notified, all teams must appear at the scheduled time ready to play, regardless of weather conditions. This is especially important in Pasadena, Altadena and La Cañada, where a hard rain at home does not necessarily mean the same conditions exist on the playing fields. Assume that the game will be played unless you hear from your coach. Once the game time arrives, the referee of the game has full responsibility for that game. Team practices, of course, may be canceled at the discretion of the team coach.
It is very important that no practices or matches take place if Region 13 has announced that they have been canceled due to weather. Our field permits could be lost by continuing to practice or play on a closed field. Playing on soggy fields creates ruts and holes that degrade the quality of the playing field. Degraded field conditions are expensive to correct and may, in fact, not be repaired due to economic constraints. In addition, degraded field conditions may be dangerous to players because of the uneven surface.
Games may also be delayed, shortened, or canceled due to excessive smog or smoke from brush fires.
Where to Get Information
Region 13 does its best to post information about cancellations of games and/or practices on the website home page. The goal is to post such information by 4 p.m. on practice days and by 7 a.m. on game days. Sometimes this type of information is delayed due to the necessity of having a volunteer physically inspect the playing fields for unsafe conditions. If you have subscribed to the Email Alert Service (see Email Alert Service in sidebar), you will receive an email when the notice is posted. However, since email can sometimes be delayed, it is a good practice to always check the website prior to leaving for a practice session or game when weather conditions dictate. If web access is inconvenient, then use the hotlines described in the following paragraphs.
For game cancellation information, call Region 13′s Hotline at 626-791-5223 and follow the menu instructions. The Region attempts to post information about canceled matches by 7:00 a.m. on game day.
For practice field cancellations, call Region 13′s Hotline at 626-791-5223 and follow the menu instructions. Region 13 attempts to post information about canceled practices by 4:00 p.m. In addition, the City of La Cañada maintains a separate system for announcing practice field closures. Information about practices in La Cañada is available at 818-790-8898 ext. 801.
